What happens if my domain expires and I haven’t renewed it?

If a domain isn’t renewed before its expiry date, it can stop working and may become unavailable to you. What happens next depends on the domain extension (for example: .co.za, .com, etc.) and the registry rules, but the process usually follows these stages:

1) Expiry date reached

Once the domain expires:

  • Your website may stop loading.
  • Email addresses on that domain may stop sending/receiving mail (or mail may bounce).
  • Services connected to the domain (website, email, apps) can be disrupted.

2) Grace period (limited time)

Some registries allow a short “grace period” after expiry where the domain can still be renewed at the normal renewal rate. This period varies by domain type and isn’t guaranteed for all extensions.

3) Redemption period (extra fees apply)

If the domain isn’t renewed during the grace period, it typically enters a redemption period (sometimes called “redemption/restore”). During redemption:

  • The domain is no longer active.
  • It can usually still be recovered by the original owner, but additional redemption/restore fees are charged by the registry on top of the normal renewal cost.
  • The redemption period is time-limited, and the fees are higher because the registry charges a restoration fee to “bring the domain back.”

4) Pending deletion / released to the public

If the domain is not renewed during redemption:

  • The registry may place the domain into a final deletion phase.
  • After that, the domain can be released back to the public.
  • Once released, anyone can register it, and recovery is no longer guaranteed. This is especially important for popular domain names.

Important notes

  • Redemption fees are set by the domain registry and are not optional once the domain enters redemption.
  • Renewing early is the safest and cheapest option. Waiting until after expiry can cost more and may risk losing the domain.
  • .co.za and .com: The exact grace/redemption timelines can differ between extensions and registries. If you’re unsure where your domain is in the process, check your Client Zone for notices and invoices.
